It's a Gas!

The new kitchen design places a cabinet where the gas pipe comes up from the basement for the oven.  Today, my brother Bill (family plumbing expert, among other skills) installed a 24" extension to the piping to clear the cabinet area.  The work area in the basement was congested, to say the least, but we moved a light fixture out of the way, drilled a new 2" hole in the floor and got the pipe installed and tested (no leaks!)

Our new dining room light fixture arrived today, and Amanda and I spent a good (or not so good) hour installing the thing.  The mounting screws that were provided were too short and the instructions were useless, but otherwise the job went smoothly - not!  I found some longer screws and nuts and we finally figured out which mounting holes would match up with the light base and got the light mounted to the ceiling.  With three 100 Watt bulbs, it puts out more than enough light for the entire dining room.  It's on a dimmer switch, so we can set the mood however we desire.

While Bill and I worked on the gas pipe, the girls moved most of the items from the kitchen cabinets to temporary storage in the dining room wall cabinets.

Sharron started ripping out the passageway framing for the wall that we will remove and finished removing all the exposed linoleum tile and underlayment.  We unbolted the cabinets by the passageway to make room for the new location of the refrigerator, which will move to the new space as soon as we patch a wall vent that is not needed and screw down the floor boards.

Amanda did the touch-up wall painting in various locations, including the patched electrical outlet by the dining room base cabinets, which we plan to shim and install tomorrow.

  1. Yeah, the very first thing I did to our house when we moved in was install a number of ceiling lights. What seemed like a relatively "easy" project turned into hours of yelling at my new house. Sigh.

  2. Yeah...I joked that the language on our construction site has taken a turn for the worse. If we had a swear jar...we'd probably have enough for another new kitchen. I think we all know better than to call a project "easy" before it has been completed.
