Drywhhoaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Today....we had a rather amusing and frustrating incident.

We made our usual trek to Home Depot this afternoon to buy a great many items for the kitchen.  Most sizably - the metal edge strips, a piece of drywall (incorrectly labeled Drywal on the signs), and molding strips.  As we took my car (the one with the roof rack), Dad strapped the drywall and metal corner strips to the roof so we could make it home.  About 2 minutes (and a non-existant wind gust) in, the 8 foot long section of drywall snapped and a portion of it went flying into the road behind us.  So after pulling off the road (near a cemetery), we re-secured the remaining drywall...and drove home.

Dad did some wiring work and we were left with this lovely display.  The wall switches are ready to mount in the wall extension, which we will build after we have routed the ends of the existing floorboards in the dining room.  We'll get pictures of that operation tomorrow when we will hopefully know how to use the router.

These last few pictures are illustrating the amazing job that the original builders did while constructing our house.  Seen here is the 5/8" gap in the wall at the door frame, caused by the sudden change in direction of the last 2 feet of wall.  When Mom is home on Friday, we will remove that entire part of the wall and install a new joist support structure and new drywall.  This is necessary to provide a consistently flat surface for the granite backsplash.  Granite doesn't bend around corners too well!

  1. I figured out why the it snapped and flew into the road. Doesn't have anything to do with forces on the piece from wind while driving. It was solely the fact that you bought drywal. Now if you had actually purchased drywall, it would be doubly reinforced and made it home just fine.

    Sigh, America, sigh.
