Getting it Straight

Today we tackled the bent wall section at the end of our kitchen cabinet line-up.  We smashed and ripped out a 23" wide section from the floor up to about the 7 foot level and installed shims to bring the support structure out to where it should have been when the house was built.  We are doing this in three sections of wallboard.  The bottom section was relatively easy, but the next one took some work.  Sharron came up with the clever idea to make a pattern of the electrical boxes on paper and then transfer them to the drywall that we would install over them.

Note the shims on the studs.  We nailed the drywall to the shims, which vary in thickness from the floor to the ceiling level
I spent most of the day getting wires run for the last under counter light, microwave outlet, and a switch and outlet for the sink light.  The drywall above the kitchen window is on solid wood all the way to the ceiling, so I had to surface mount the outlet and cut a channel in the drywall to route the wire to the switch.  It will all be covered by the cabinets, but I would have preferred a more conventional installation!

Amanda rolled the first coat of paint on the east wall.  The paint we are using has a primer in it and is so thick that a second coat is hardly needed.

I installed some new switch/outlets to replace the old stuff and applied some drywall tape and spackling on the two sections of wall board that we installed today.  Here's how it looked as it dried tonight.

  1. Terrific idea, Sharron! I love when teamwork and great ideas come together like that!

Regarding the paint....ummmm, I think Amanda missed a spot. ;)
